Block spam on Wordpress the easy way

There are many plugins and other solutions to block spam from your Wordpress blog. There is a lot of debate as to which methods work best but I think that manually approving comments and using comment captchas is a lot of extra work turns visitors away.

The biggest problem I have had is with people using automated bots to post thousands of comments on old posts.

With Wordpress 2.7, there is a quick and easy way to cut back on your blog spam.

Log into your dashboard and click Settings > Discussion and check off the box beside: Automatically close comments on articles older than. The default number of days is 14, feel free to change it to something else, if you like.

What this feature does is turn off comments on posts that are older than 14 days, which means no more trackback, pingback or comment spam on those older posts. Yippee!

I find that after a post is a couple weeks old, mostly no one comments on them anymore, right?

If you’re not using Wordpress 2.7 you can still get this feature by installing a plugin called Close Old Posts written my Matt Mullenweg himself.

Enjoy !

Thanks for pointing this out Richard, I actually turned this on on DNN the other day, was using a plugin for it before. I also still like the Spam Karma2 plugin, but unfortunately it is not being updated any more.
